Photo of the Week

Yikes! A second look shows this skier (Tony Klarich) is not about to be hit by a boat. Rather, he is performing a show trick called "Around the Boat" (ATB). As photographer Dennis Bickers explains, "In a typical ATB, the skier hangs out in the trough next to the wake until the boat driver gives the signal to cut out hard. The driver turns hard one way and the skier goes the other way. During this 'crack-the-whip,' the skier reaches speeds in excess of 50 mph. It is during this top speed that the driver quickly changes direction and turns the boat aggressively in the other direction. During this period the skier and boat are traveling in opposite directions and the tow-line passes over the windshield of the boat. Now the boat driver accelerates back up to speed as the skier keeps the rope tight and completes the turn at the end of the trick." Show ski training is taking place weekly in the North Ski Area. To learn more, see Page B-2.
