Honor veterans and active duty service members

The unveiling of the new Veterans Monument was a highlight of the 11-11-11 Veterans Day Ceremony.

Canyon Lakers are encouraged to invite guests and mark their calendars for a Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday, November 12, at 10 a.m. in the Towne Center. As in past years, the event will feature inspirational music and speakers, special recognition, a flyover of T34 Heritage Foundation planes and light refreshments.

A new feature this year will be the acceptance of a gift of two black marble vases to be placed beside the Veterans Monument for the convenience of those wishing to leave flowers. In addition, the City will pay tribute to many local organizations that carry out projects to support veterans and active service members.

The Veterans Day Committee is working to update the list of veterans and service members already on file. Those who wish to be on the list, or who have a family member or friend who should be on the list, can contact Courtney Black at City Hall for an application.

In addition, Veterans Day Committee Chair Nancy Horton asks families with active duty relatives and friends to bring a 5x7 photo to City Hall as soon as possible, where they will be displayed for the month of November.

"We also are looking for a few good people to help with delivery of flags on the weekend prior to November 12," says Nancy. "Flags are placed at the homes of every veteran and service member. The Ladies of the Lake will be readying the flags by attaching the note thanking veterans and service members for their service and furling the flags for delivery."

Residents who wish to honorably retire tattered and used American flags may bring them to the ceremony and they will be transported to the Veterans of Foreign Wars for retirement. The Veterans Day Committee will offer flags, coins, patriotic greeting cards, T shirts and polos for sale at the event.

It is not too late for sponsors and individuals to come forward with donations. For more information, call City Hall at 244-2955 or visit cityofcanyonlake.com.
