Evening of praise, worship, comedy

Celebrate Recovery Canyon Lake will mark it’s five-year anniversary with “An Evening of Praise, Worship & Comedy,” featuring professional comedian Thor Ramsey. It will be held Saturday, August 11, at 6:30 p.m. at Canyon Lake Community Church. A nationally renowned comedian, Thor Ramsey is known for his best-selling DVD series,“Thou Shalt Laugh” and the Sony-owned comedy series, “Bananas,” which he hosted. Doors open at 6 p.m. and admission is free.

Saturday Nights at The Cup Above

On Saturday evenings, The Cup Above in the Towne Center offers a time of music, open microphone and an opportunity to have a bite to eat and socialize without smoking or alcohol. The gathering is free and there is no obligation to purchase anything.

'Les Miserables'

“Les Miserables” is coming to the Lakeside Rotary Performing Art Center in August. Presented by Theatre Royale, this epic story recounts the struggle against adversity in 19th century France. Imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, petty thief Jean Valjean is released from his 19-year term and not only becomes an honest man, but the mayor of a prosperous town and a loving adoptive father ? violating his parole in the process. The relentless Inspector Javert, continues to pursue him. Only years later, after Valjean proves his mettle during a bloody student uprising and saves the life of a young man hopelessly in love with Valjean’s adopted daughter, does the ex-convict finally feel fully redeemed.

Four Canyon Lake teens appear in this production: Chris Vecchione, Alex Landau, Nick Robert and Nathaniel Leedahl. For tickets, call 245-1422.

Show dates are the weekend of August 17, 18 and 19, and the weekend of August 24, 25 and 26. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m.

Tribute to Ray Charles

Canyon Lakers are invited to a musical “Tribute to Ray Charles” on Saturday, August 18, at 2 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living, 26805 Murrieta Rd. in Sun City.

This event will feature noted Ray Charles impersonator, Charles Middleton, known for his performances at such Las Vegas venues as Caesar's Palace, Mirage, Tropicana, Sands, Aladdin, New York, New York and more. Critics say, "'Mr. Charles' Middleton captures the essence of the late, great Ray Charles in such a way that preserves the soul and character of the music."
